In immature DCs, internalization of MHC class II molecules from the plasma membrane may require the ubiquitin ligase MARCH1, which is controlled by interleukin-10 (IL-10).
CD83 on mature DCs prevents this ubiquitylation of MHC class II molecules and thus stabilizes MHC class II molecules on the cell surface.
Addidionally it prevents CD86 ubiquitinqtion.
