Purified protein S was equivalent to serum in its ability to stimulate macrophage phagocytosis of apoptotic lymphoma cells, and immunodepletion of protein S eliminated the prophagocytic activity of serum. Protein S acted by binding to phosphatidylserine expressed on the apoptotic cell surface.
