During EMT, tightly zipped and largely immobile epithelial cells transform into highly mobile mesenchymal cells. The process requires disruption of cell-matrix adhesions (PMID: 11707509), including focal adhesion complexes (PMID: 11707510, PMID: 10436008, PMID: 15688067) and integrin signaling (PMID: 19118207, PMID: 15157156).
