Alpha-actinin servers a link between cytoskeletal actin (in stress fibres) and vinculin at the focal contacts.
Phosphorylation of alpha-actinin by FAK1 (PTK2) redues this ability of linking actin to vinculin, thus prevents the maturation of focal contacts.
